A Stroll Through Trogir’s History

Trogir’s history traces back to prehistoric times, with significant development during the Greek era in the 3rd century BC. Originally a Greek settlement named Tragurion, founded by settlers from Vis, it later became part of the expanding Roman Empire in Dalmatia. Throughout the centuries, Trogir has seen varied rule, from Hungarian and Croatian governance to the Venetian Empire, and later the Austrian Empire. After World War I, Trogir joined the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) and eventually became part of independent Croatia in 1991.

Exploring Trogir’s Rich Heritage

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is Trogir’s crowning jewel, with construction beginning in 1213. This magnificent structure was completed in 1250, featuring a bell tower built between the 14th and 16th centuries offering breathtaking views. Inside, the Chapel of St. John, built in 1468, is a renowned Renaissance masterpiece in Dalmatia.

Visitors can also see parts of the city walls, erected between the 13th and 14th centuries, and the city gate, built in 1593. The city loggia, dating back to the 14th or 15th century, has served various purposes over the years, including a court. It houses a relief by Ivan Meštrović, depicting Petar Berislavić of Trogir.

The Cipiko Palaces, once the home of a noble family in the 15th century, face the cathedral. The Kamerlengo Fortress, located at the island’s southwestern tip, offers stunning views over the Riva, Old Town, and the sea.
